Reflections from St. Loius…

8th June 2006

June_2006 022

Just got back from St. Louis, and it was great!! Besides finally meeting my West coast classmates from USC, I had the unique chance to connect with hundreds of alumni, professionals, recruiters, colleagues, and supporters of the Consortium for Graduate Studies in Management (www.cgsm.org) at their 40th Orientation Program (OP) for fellowship recipients.

Not only did the USC Consortium Class of 2008 (aka The Best from the West) finally unite for the first time this weekend, but in many ways, I feel we stood out amongst our peers, and I’m blessed to be part of this winning team.

For all who guided, coached, and prepared us for success (Kellee, Mike, Stephanie, & Chris), I can’t thank you enough.

And to my fellow Trojans…Fight on!!

Brazil Trip 2006 - Photos

30th April 2006

Whew!! Just got back last night from a two week vacation / business trip to Rio de Janeiro & Salvador, Brazil…and for me, it was an equally relaxing & challenging adventure.

This marked the first time I have every travelled abroad with another person — let alone 4 others (my sister - pictured - and 3 of her friends) who didn’t speak the language.

Between showing them the sites, bargaining for apartment deals, meeting with business contacts, bringing closure to a long-distance relationship, and just enjoying the sun, it was definitely a challenge, but one I would do again in a heartbeat.

So much to see, do, and experience in such a short time, but somehow, we managed.

Long Time, No Write…

6th April 2006

Me in Salvador

Hey all – I know it’s been a while since most of you have heard from me in the “outside world” (i.e. not in Cyberspace), and although I wish I had maintained contact a little better, I can definitely say that my months of self-imposed isolation have paid off – tremendously ;) )

As some of you know, I left Accenture just over a year ago and immediately started working independently & applying to Business School. It hasn’t been easy making time for clients, GMAT exams, fellowship applications, and keeping in touch, but last month, I got the best news an aspiring student can hope for…

I just earned a full-tuition fellowship for the University of Southern California (USC) in Los Angeles !!!!

I’m as happy to share this news as I was to hear it. With that, it looks like my days are numbered in the Big Apple as the fall semester approaches, so I’m on a self-appointed mission to re-connect with any and everybody in the months to come.

Also, since I’m not that familiar with L.A., I’d appreciate any advice, contacts, or free apartments you can throw my way (especially that last one). Seriously, since I have to find a new apartment, move my things, and buy a car before the end of July, I could also use a few extra pennies.

It turns out that New York is a hard place to save money (who knew?), so one thing you can do to help that is *completely free* is to CLICK ANY OF THE ADS YOU SEE ON THIS PAGE - ONCE A DAY, EVERY DAY ;) That simple gesture will ensure that I get one step closer to making this huge transition a reality. In exchange, I’ll be sure to fill this blog with updates and interesting content on a regular basis.

Also, if you find it in the kindness of your heart to drop a dollar in the “collection plate,” just click the “Make a Donation” link above. Finally, I’m always eager to work for a living (even though I’m still committed other clients part-time), so if you know any freelance / short term technology gigs on the East Coast (ideally in a Media, Entertainment, or Financial firm), please let me know (or download my resume from the “About” section and pass it along).

Above all, though, I look forward to re-entering the “world of the living,” training Capoeira again, traveling, writing, and — most importantly — keeping in touch.

Hotep, Axé, & Peace

The Key to Life Eternal

5th April 2006

lá em casa temChrist is praised for saving souls. / Mandela was jailed but later he rose /

To vanquish the violence in his native land / And became a great activist, leader, and man.

Mahatma fought for Global Peace, / While Martin used his views to lead

A March that filled our nation’s streets / And ended with a moving speech.

As nations rise and leaders fall / All generations will recall

The lives that lead this world to change / And those who’s impact still remains.

We’ve gained insight from leaders past / Who’s lives were large enough to cast

A shadow that could shroud the sky, / And in our hearts, they’ll never die.

So why should I desire less? /Indeed I have a simple quest…

To live, to love, to lead, to learn, / To share my heart ‘til I return

Into the Earth from whist I came / And after that, I shall remain

Upon the Earth, but not through fame; / Instead, inside each heart I came

In contact with each day I played / This Game of Life, and thus, I’ll stay

Alive through them, for then, I’ll gain / Eternal Life through lives I’ve made

An impact on during the span / Of my brief life — which proves a man

Can truly live forever when / The Love he’s shared can live again.

Is “One” really the Magic Number? I beg to differ…

7th March 2006

4Four4

Ever since I was a little kid, I’ve been shown signs to assist me in my path towards…well — something. I’m not sure where all these signs are leading me, but from what I’m able to figure out so far, it must be something important. Otherwise, I’ve been going through life making more sense out of random experiences than I needed to.

I don’t remember the first sign I ever received, but I can clearly recall the impact of my first premonition. Waking up one morning as a child, I headed straight to my mother and — somehow — I had a message for her.

"I have some numbers for you mommy."

"Numbers? What numbers?" she asked, somewhat confused.

"444," I replied.

To this day, I still don’t know where these numbers came from, but naturally, my mom did the first thing any self-respecting Black mother would do with such cryptic & important information…

…she went straight to the Lotto booth.

In all fairness, she actually gave the numbers to my Grandfather, who from there, promptly played these numbers (straight, not boxed — which actually didn’t make a difference) at the nearest IGA grocery store on the West side of Columbus, Ohio.

The next day, he won. I had picked the winning numbers.

From that day forward, the numbers "444" have persistently found their way into my life at crucial transition points, and have always been a beacon of hope within times of dispair.

For instance, shortly after my grandfather, Henry Warren, successfully capitalized on my numerical premontion, he unfortunately suffered a life-threatening stroke. After he was rushed to Mount Carmel Hospital and kept for several days for observation, I finally had to courage to visit him (along with my mom and sister). Our family wasn’t sure if he would make it out alive, but once we made it to his room, I felt an unspoken assurance that he would be alright. He was staying in room 44 on the 4th floor of the hospital, and a few short days later, he returned home with no residual effects.

As I grew up, these numbers continued to follow me, with pertainent events often occurring at 4:44pm, and other instances appearing in different ways. Well into adulthood, these numbers continue to be a sign of positive things to come.

While working for Accenture in January of 2004, I was assigned to work as the lead on a JPMorgan Chase project in Manhattan for several months at the beginning of the year. I was naturally intimidated by the weight of my first leadership role with a major American corporate client, and wasn’t sure I was up to the challenge. As my manager told me at the time, the role would have "more blanks to fill in, and less direction from management," which seemed daunting. Luckily for me, my fears were averted once I realized where my new client was located. For the first 4 month of ‘04, I successfully worked with IB Technology in JPMorgan Chase’s Park Avenue Office…on the 44th floor.

All that being said, I consistently find a reason to have faith in the direction of my path based on frequent occurrances of these magical numbers. That’s not to say that internal impusles are ignored in exchange for external guidance, but I truly believe that the repetition of themes, numbers, experiences, and suggestions in life often serves to reinforce the direction of one’s personal path towards self-actualization.

So, should I put all my faith in these numbers? Perhaps. Perhaps not. But at the moment, I choose to. After all, with my fellowship application to NYU’s Business School in it’s final stages, I can’t help but believe that their address in New York (44 W. 4th Street) is more than a coincidence.

Through the prism of television

we see ouselves tinted in colors that do not suit our frame…

we’re the crooks, and the clowns, yet we constantly name

ourselves as the victims of Establishment’s Game,

all the while trying hard to find Fortune and Fame

from within the confines of the System we blame.
